Tirzah
Entry Requirements: over 18s only
Tirzah is a singer and songwriter based in South East London. Since 2013 she has been making music with longtime friend and musical partner Mica Levi, first releasing a series of EPs on Greco-Roman Records and later two (soon to be three) LPs on Domino Records.
Tirzah’s debut LP, released in 2018, ‘Devotion’ received a ‘Best New Music’ award on Pitchfork, soon becoming a favorite for music connoisseurs around the world. Described as ‘alluring stories of intimacy and love’ by the Guardian it established Tirzah as an artist of emotional depth and authenticity.
Tirzah, Mica and fellow collaborator Coby Sey then toured the record through 2019 and 2020, playing two legendary sold out shows at London’s Scala as well as dozens of festivals including Primavera Barcelona, Roskilde, Lowlands & Field Day.
Tirzah’s second LP ‘Colourgrade’ came in 2021 not long after the birth of her second child. A deeply personal and sonically rich album, it pushed even further than Devotion into uncharted sonic territories but retained the honest storytelling for which Tirzah had become loved. Named as one of the top albums of the year by BBC 6Music, The Guardian, Pitchfork, Gorilla Vs Bear, Fader, Loud & Quiet and Stereogum (in addition to being nominated for best second album at the AIM Awards) it could not have been a more critically acclaimed record and cemented Tirzah and Mica as perhaps the leading avant-garde musicians in the UK.
Sold out shows at London’s Brixton Electric, New York’s Brooklyn Steel, LA’s Regent Theater and Manchester’s Stoller Hall then followed, along with performances at Pitchfork London, GALA, Melt, BRDCST, Corona Capital and the biggest crowd of the day at We Out Here in South London.
In and amongst her own music Tirzah has also occasionally collaborated with other artists including Babyfather, Lafawndah, Mura Masa, Kwes and Speakers Corner Quartet. She has also appeared as part of ‘Taz & Meeks’, releasing cult favorite ‘Obviously’ on Mount Kimbie’s DJ-Kicks record.
Last but not least, Tirzah also released a series of remixes in 2022, commissioning friends and family to rework every song on Colourgrade. Remixers included Arca, Actress, Loraine James, Still House Plants, Wu-Lu, Fauzia, Anja Ngozi and Speakers Corner Quartet.
Tirzah is an important British artist. Her work resonates with audiences who appreciate a push on the boundaries of pop music and those who believe exploration needn’t come at the cost of connection.
