PETE MOLINARI is a young country blues genius from the Medway Delta. He has just finished recording his second album with producer Liam Watson at Toe Rag Studios, and it showcases Pete’s remarkable falsetto: you’ll hear shades of Woody Guthrie, Jimmy Scott, Bob Dylan and Patsy Cline in a voice and a poetry that is entirely Molinari’s own.

"All great truths begin as blasphemies," proclaimed the fiery playwright George Bernard Shaw. It's a sentiment that can be applied exponentially to the works of rapper Sage Francis and his exhilarating new album Li(f)e. Francis has never been afraid to provoke. As a result he is a sometimes polarizing and increasingly important figure in modern music. Adored by many, reviled by a few but never ignored and always essential, Sage Francis has emerged as the reigning agent provocateur of hip hop.

Widows in Paradise: An Evening Celebrating the Songs of Sufjan Stevens

CG & Gathering present...

22/09/10 @ 19:00
Widows In Paradise: An evening celebrating the songs of Sufjan Stevens.
Eccentric evangelist songwriter Sufjan Stevens has certainly made his mark on the indie folk landscape in the last five years. After countless accolades, effortlessly crafted tunes and glowing reviews it's pretty much the general consensus that he's a rather talented chap. This evening will honour and celebrate songs spanning Stevens' career, and features performances and collaborations from members of several local acts including Open Swimmer, Washington Irving, Julia & The Doogans, Randolph's Leap, Endor, Esperi, Quickbeam and more.

Frankie and The Heartstrings + Summer Camp

a stereo presentation...

06/10/10 @ 19:00
£7

Stereo presents a double headline bill with Sunderland's hotly tipped piece, Frankie and the Heartstrings and boy/girl duo Summer Camp.

Says the Guardian about Frankie and the Heartstrings:  “Their stomping sound – which is surely scientifically impossible to dislike – dips into Dexys circa Searching for the Young Soul Rebels, mid-period Clash, 60s pop, Orange Juice, northern soul, romance and literature without loitering anywhere.”

Says the Guardian about Summer Camp:  "If Washed Out offer the comedown from the utopian gauzy beach party," wrote one blogger, "then Summer Camp are the band who played the prom the night before, peppier than their morning-after bedfellows."

Girlyman + The Porch Song Anthology

07/10/10 @ 19:00
Glasgow Americana 2010
presented by The Fallen Angels Club
in association with Sounds in the Suburbs
presents

Right now Girlyman are one of the biggest independent bands in the States and their current, superb CD ‘Everything’s Easy’ was recently the biggest selling album on CD Baby, that’s out of 278,510!

Independent Music Award winners, Doris, Ty & Nate, have recently been joined by drummer JJ Jones, formerly of Po’Girl, and so will be touring as a 4 piece. Amazingly this band, former stage partners of The Indigo Girls, have never toured in the UK so their many UK fans have never had the chance to see them live. We can’t wait.

MICE PARADE / SILJE NES

KMR present...

08/10/10 @ 19:00
£8.50

Mice Parade was originally the solo project of New Yorker Adam Pierce, who has also played in Swirlies, The Dylan Group, HiM, múm, and Philistines Jr. Merging folk-tinged electronica with the 'Loveless' era swoon of My Bloody Valentine, the rhythmic subtlety of Can, and the opaque melodic experiments of Brian Eno, Mice Parade's sound is essentially modern, informed by an esoteric palette, retaining a familiar acoustic presence via an uncliched take on folk/world influences.
Support comes from Fat Cat's Norwegian multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter SiljeNes.Starting making her own music around 2001, Silje began by recording on 4-track demo software through a tiny inbuilt microphone on her laptop. Though she'd previously studied classical piano, when she started recording, she did so with guitars and instruments she had no previous experience of playing. In this she was simply guided by the sounds she loved, and the excitement of discovering new instruments and sounds without learned conventions. Starting out by working purely instrumentally, she made use of whatever equipment she could get hold of - guitars and an old synth, a cello, a drum kit, a laptop, as well as loop pedals to build layers of her own playing. Little by little she also found ways of including her own voice in the mix, both as texture and song, and her music has organically evolved from there.

STEVE MASON (of BETA BAND)

PCL present...

19/10/10 @ 19:00

Having recently signed to Domino imprint Double Six, Steve Mason released his latest album Boys Outside, in May this year.

The 10-track album was produced by Richard X and Steve Mason.

Very much indicative of the fragile, stripped down, haunting sound of the album, Single ‘All Come Down’ was released as a download only single in December of last year and was roundly praised for it’s beauty and simplicity drawing numerous comparisons to his early work with the Beta Band on the 3 EPs album.

All Come Down is still currently available as a free download via the following this link

Previously recorded as both King Biscuit Time and Black Affair, both largely electronic based projects, Steve Mason consciously made a decision to go back to basics; the album was written entirely on acoustic guitar with many of the finished tracks stripped back to reveal his undoubted songwriting talent.

The Ex + Desalvo

Tickets available here: http://www.tickets-scotland.com/booking.html?booking_method=viewevent&booking_event_id=72d9e16c-8446-11df-9d53-12313b076c61

Formed in 1979, The Ex has developed over the years into a melting-pot of diverse musical styles: noise, rock, jazz, improvisation, and ethnic musics have been interweaved under one unique umbrella: "Ex-music". Discordant, highly rhythmic guitars, the rolling, almost African drumming style, and the intense delivery of the often ironic lyrics give the music of The Ex its special character.

So far, in almost 30 years, The Ex has played 1371 concerts all over Europe, North America and Africa, and released over 20 albums. Never pigeon-holed into one of pop music's corny corners, The Ex is continuously in development, and always open for new ideas and collaborations with people of all kinds, people whose spirit inspires and appeals to the group. The main principle remains; to make music with heart and soul, out of reach of commercial trends or expectations.

The Tallest Man on Earth + guests

a synergy concerts presentation

22/11/10 @ 19:00
£11 STBF
"Pesky comparisons to Bob Dylan have dogged Kristian Matsson throughout his short career as the Tallest Man on Earth. In 2006, his self-titled EP introduced a singer with that familiar croak, a songwriter with a folk-revival revival sensibility, and a guitar player with an impressively agile fingerpicking style. The next year, his full-length debut, Shallow Grave, expanded nicely on those ideas, buffing away some of the rougher edges but emphasizing fully realized and beautifully evocative songs. The Wild Hunt, the second Tallest Man on Earth album and first for Dead Oceans, makes a few specific nods to Dylan at his most earnest and bare-- including a reference to "boots of Spanish leather" on "King of Spain". Ultimately, though, Matsson interprets Dylan, just as Dylan himself interpreted Guthrie. More to the point, Matsson translates him into the Scandinavian countryside, where he sings about changing seasons and quiet, lonely places far from cities. His lyrics are rough and often ragged, more concerned with evoking aching emotions than with making explicit sense. But that coded aspect only makes him sound more urgent, as if he's trying to convince you of something he couldn't possibly put into words."  PITCHFORK  8.5/10
