Further information on Volkov & Dunietz...
Ilan Volkov As chief conductor of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Volkov is a significant presence in the mainstream classical world. Yet as an improvising musician and founder of the Tectonics festival he is also deeply immersed in more avant garde currents. Tectonics Festival - held in Reykjavík, Glasgow, New York, Tel Aviv and Australia - aims to explore the hinterland between experimental and orchestral music. Each reflects Volkov’s determination to cross musical genres and keep alive the creative spirit and sense of artistic adventure that shaped modernist compositions of the last century.
Maya Dunietz Maya Dunietz, born in 1981, is a composer, pianist and sound installation artist. Her work ranges between solo performances, composing for ensembles around the world, writing for theatre, creating sound installations, building electronic instruments, playing and singing. Alongside her extensive commission work Dunietz performs regularly around the world playing free improvisation and has played with numerous artists such as John Butcher, Zeena Parkins, Ghedalia Tazartes, David Moss and Steve Noble, to name a few.
Ivor Kallin- Ambrosia Rasputin Ivor Kallin AKA Ambrosia Rasputin (a moniker adopted whilst hosting a regular radio show on Resonance FM) - is a Scottish improviser given to vocal improvisations, bizarre rants and sound poetry in the tradition of canntaireachd. He currently plays bass with Ya Basta, bass with the Horseless Headmen, viola with the improv string trio Barrel and in the London Improvisors Orchestra.
Neil Davidson (solo) An almost melodic direction from the Glasgow based guitarist, also of Asparagus Piss Raindrop and Muris. The music toys with a romantic aesthetic where the romantic form is broken totally. Fragmented and unresolved, the improvising gesture becomes more like an act of repair rather than invention.
